Defending Tortured Poets

So I’ve had this conversation enough times in the past week to warrant a blog post. People seem to really dislike Taylor Swift’s new music, especially her albums Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department, but her new stuff is good! So good!! I don’t get the hate. I’m a big fan of her new pop stuff, and her voice has gotten so much stronger over the years. Hot take, but I actually really like her song “Anti-Hero.” And I won’t apologize for it.

Especially as the weather warms up, I’m really getting back into Tortured Poets. I mean, come on, “The Alchemy,” “Fresh Out The Slammer,” and “Florida!!!” are right there. How can you not obsessively listen to them? The slower songs are also incredible and showcase her lyricism. The bridges alone of “loml” and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” are enough to make me love this album.

Also, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I just relistened to “So High School,” and it’s really catchy…. Yes it’s a little cringey, but man that beat is incredible.

I think where I differ from other Swifties is that I like the original Tortured Poets more than The Anthology. Sure, I think The Anthology flows better together overall, but it just has so many more skips. (I mean, are we being serious right now with “I Look in People’s Windows”?)

At any rate, here is a short video I created for a video editing assignment from my training semester at the DKC. Please enjoy! Just know that I had to cut the script down from its original 2 minutes to 30 seconds. Yes it was difficult to trim down my love for Taylor.

Update as of 2026-01-14:

Guys, Taylor released her album “The Life of a Showgirl,” and all I have to say is yikes… it’s getting difficult to like her new music.
